Our staff are specialists in media, art, design, architecture, history, classics and archaeology, and they cooperate in projects focusing on various themes. For example, various historians, art historians and archaeologists study heritage, memory and landscape history. Interdisciplinary cooperation also plays an important role in the department’s research methods, as well as in the field of Digital Humanities.
History teaching and research is characterized by an approach that does not automatically assume European history as a logical starting point and which considers long-term perspectives. Departmental research is mainly carried out within CLUE+, the interfaculty research institute for Culture, History and Heritage at the VU.
