After he defended his doctoral dissertation – Over de dichtkunst; een lezing met demonstraties – about the poetry and poetics of Leo Vroman, Ben became a senior lecturer at Utrecht University.
Since June 1, 2007 Ben was full professor of Modern Dutch Literature in our faculty of Humanities. He served twice as department head, from 2010 to 2014 as head of Literature and Culture and from 2014 to September 2017 as head of the department of Language, Literature and Communication. As professor of Modern Dutch Literature he led the Literature and Society group of our faculty.
Since 2011 Ben was president of the Humanities and Libraries Committee of the Council of Culture, and until the beginning of this year he served as the president of VU University Library Committee. He was appointed in 2017 as a member of the Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.
Our thoughts are with his family and with all close to him. We offer our condolences and wish them much strength in mourning this great loss.
A book of condolence has been placed in the hall of the faculty on the 12th floor opposite room 12A-44.
